Here are some plants that cope well a bit of heat, can handle missed waterings (oops) and stay looking good with minimal effort.
Succulents
Succulents are one of the easiest container choices. Varieties such as echeveria, jade plant, aloe, crassula, sedum and kalanchoe store water in their leaves. They prefer good drainage and bright light, and many also produce small flowers (bonus!).
Snake plant
These hardy plants can tolerate heat, shade and hit-and-miss watering. They also grow slowly and rarely need repotting, making them a long-term, low-effort option.
Zanzibar gem
Ideal for containers in sheltered spots. Their thick stems store moisture, so if watering slips your mind occasionally, it's not the end of the world (or your plant). They also tolerate lower light than many other plants.
Geraniums
Good old geraniums are dependable flowering plants for pots. They can handle warm conditions, don't mind drying out slightly and flower for long periods. An occasional trim keeps them compact and encourages fresh growth.
Lavender
Thrives in containers with good drainage and plenty of sun. Once established, lavender doesn't need much water and produces a light fragrance as well as colour. Light pruning after flowering will keep it tidy.
Rosemary
Particularly well suited to pots, rosemary prefers free-draining soil, copes well with heat and doesn't need loads of watering. It looks and smells great and is handy for cooking.
Lomandra
The grassy foliage stays neat, plus they tolerate heat and inconsistent watering and rarely need trimming.
Dianella
Compact varieties are tough and container friendly. They handle warm conditions, have lovely foliage and produce small blue or purple flowers with minimal care.
Cordyline
Compact varieties suit pots well and only need moderate watering and good drainage to stay healthy.
Aspidistra
Often called the 'cast iron plant' aspidistra tolerates shade, irregular watering and container life extremely well. It's ideal for low-light patios and indoor pots.
Agave
Works best in larger containers where it can shine as a feature plant. It thrives in sunny positions and doesn't need much water or attention. Recommended varieties include Twin Flower Agave (Agave geminiflora), Queen Victoria Agave (Agave victoriae-reginae), Whale's Tongue Agave (Agave ovatifolia), Smooth Agave (Agave desmettiana), Parry’s Agave (Agave parryi).
Pigface
Adapts well to wide pots and shallow containers. It stores water in its leaves, handles heat easily and produces bright, daisy-like flowers with very little care.
Portulaca
Perfect for containers in sunny spots that won't get watered often. It spreads gently over pot edges, tolerates dry conditions and produces colourful flowers for long periods.
Yucca
Yucca grows well in containers and suits open, sunny spaces. It copes with heat, can survive infrequent watering and minimal maintenance. Recommended varieties include Spineless Yucca (Yucca elephantipes / Y. gigantea), Soft Leaf Yucca (Yucca desmetiana), Adam’s Needle (Yucca filamentosa), Joshua Tree (Yucca brevifolia)
Bougainvillea
Performs well in pots and often flowers better when slightly root bound. It thrives in sunny positions, handles heat easily and needs only occasional pruning to stay compact.
Gardenia
Gardenias can thrive in containers if they have good drainage. Once settled, they reward you with glossy foliage and fragrant flowers without needing constant attention.
Mandevilla
Grows well in large pots, handles warm conditions, flowers over long periods and needs only moderate watering and the occasional trim.
Hibiscus
Compact hibiscus varieties suit container growing and cope well with warmth. They'll withstand the occasional missed watering and reward you with large, colourful flowers for much of the year.
Vinca
Extremely tough in containers, especially in sunny spots. It tolerates heat and dry spells and continues flowering steadily with very little care once established. Recommended varieties include - Titan Series, Cora Cascade Series, Pacific Series (e.g., Pacifica Mix), Vinca 'Little Mixed'.
Ficus elastica
Also known as rubber plants, they grow happily in containers in sheltered outdoor spaces or indoors. They tolerate missed waterings, adapt to different light levels and grow slowly.
Dracaena
Excellent low-effort container plants. They cope with heat, variable light and irregular watering, making them ideal for patios, balconies and indoor pots.
Petunias
Surprisingly low maintenance in containers, especially in sunny spots. They flower heavily and recover well after dry spells.
Calibrachoa
Often grown in hanging pots, calibrachoa produces masses of small flowers. It tolerates warmth and doesn't need constant watering.
Impatiens
They grow quickly, flower freely and don't need much more than regular watering and protection from harsh sun.
Hardy herbs
Thyme, oregano, sage and chives are well suited to containers. They prefer good drainage, handle warmth and don't need frequent watering once established.
These easy-care plants show that you can enjoy colourful, attractive pots without constant watering, pruning or attention - just the right spot and the occasional check-in.
