Reduce Reuse Recycle

How to decorate for a party - without plastic!

Whatever your age, there’s nothing nicer than getting together with friends and family at a party. What’s not so nice can be the number of plastic decorations left over at the end of the celebrations.

Decorations

  • Plants in pots are a fantastic choice for adding a touch of greenery to your party. And the best part? You can reuse them over and over again!

  • You can also use palm fronds or ivy if you have any around your garden.

  • Think pinecones, pebbles, or seashells as natural and reusable elements that can spruce up your décor.

  • Embrace the beauty of fresh flowers, twigs, and natural twine in jars. They add an elegant and earthy touch to tables and can be composted afterwards.

  • Grab a hole-puncher and cut out colourful paper circles instead of using glitter.

  • Make your own confetti from dried leaves, flower petals, or colourful shredded paper.

  • Instead of traditional balloons or streamers, go for paper or fabric bunting. It’s available ready-made or if you need a particular theme or colour, grab some fabric, and make your own. It's a charming and reusable choice that adds a festive touch to any occasion.

  • Now, let's talk about pom poms! You can easily make them yourself using colourful paper. And after the party, offer them up on your local Buy Nothing Facebook page so someone else can enjoy them at their next celebration. It's a win-win for everyone!

Lights

  • Who said Christmas lights are just for Christmas? Not us! Drag them out and use them as dazzling table decorations for a magical touch.

  • For a cosy and intimate feel, candles are a must-have. You don't need fancy candleholders; drinking glasses, mason jars, plates, or trays can do the trick.

  • And if you're hosting an evening event, use solar lanterns for a sustainable and enchanting glow.

Tables

When it comes to table coverings, say goodbye to plastic tablecloths – instead, get creative.

You could use:

  • Old newspapers or sheet music pages.

  • Grab a piece of fabric and decorate it yourself with fabric markers or paint. You can even make it a joint effort by asking your friends to help decorate the table cover at the party. It'll add a personal touch and make for some great memories.

  • If it’s for a significant birthday – grab a white tablecloth and get all the party guests to sign it for a great memento of the day/evening.

Don’t forget the charity shops!

If you're on the hunt for unique and budget-friendly decorations head to your local op shops! You'll be amazed at the hidden treasures you can find, such as old vases for flowers or fabric that can be transformed into bunting. Let your imagination run wild and create a one-of-a-kind party atmosphere.
