Plastic lids recycling update!

You may have noticed that a lot of places which previously collected plastic lids are no longer accepting them. This is because the business which used to process most of the lids is no longer operating. So, what can you do with them?

June 24, 2021

The good news is that some plastic bottle lids can still be recycled. This can be done via the government’s Containers for Change scheme, (where you drop your eligible containers for a 10c refund).

Containers for Change will accept plastic lids from eligible containers only. These are the lids from the containers which are eligible for the 10c refund. There is no refund for the lids.

Eligible containers with plastic lids include:

Soft drink bottles

Bottled water

Small, flavoured milk drinks

Sports drinks

They will not accept lids from the following:

Plain milk containers

Flavoured milk more than 1 litre

Fruit and vegetable juice more than 1 litre

Cordials & concentrated fruit & vegetable juices

How to donate

Remove the lids from the containers and drop them at your local Containers for Change depot in a separate bag. There is no refund for the lids, but they are processed to make a variety of items and are diverted from landfill.

This scheme may not include all plastic lids but at least by recycling some of them this way, we are keeping more plastic out of landfill.
