How to recycle your old socks

Let’s face it, our socks work pretty hard – they are cooped up in shoes all day, put up with smelly feet, bunions and toenails which are too long – not to mention losing their partner in the wash! It’s no wonder they don’t last too long. The good news is old and unwanted socks can be recycled.

First – if your problem is single socks put them together with another odd sock – you are bound to have more than one! Non-matching socks are all the rage – with some stores even selling ‘pairs’ of odd socks.

But what about the socks which you just don’t wear anymore or have reached the end of their life? We’ve got 3 recycling options.

Upparel

  • They accept all brands of socks and stockings.
  • Purchase a low cost, compostable satchel with a prepaid label, which will be sent to you.
  • The weight limit is 500g – roughly 10 pairs of socks or 20 individual socks.
  • Please wash all socks first. Upparel can’t accept anything unwashed as they risk contaminating other pairs being prepared for up-cycling and recycling.
  • When full, drop the satchel into an Australia Post mailbox – or hand it in at the counter.

Zara and H&M

Both H&M and Zara offer a recycling service for any brand of unwanted clothes (any condition) at some of their Australian stores. Clothing in good condition is reused and sold by charities. Clothing and textiles in poor condition are either recycled into cleaning rags or sent to a fabric fibre recycler to create new fabrics and products such as insulation for cars and the construction industry. Contact your nearest store to ask if they have a collection point.
