Choose a spot that gets plenty of sunlight and has the space to hold your plants. It's also important to choose containers that have good drainage, use high-quality potting mix, and to water them regularly. Also, watch out for any pests or plant diseases and make sure to put something underneath your containers to catch any water that drains out, or you’ll have puddles on your floor!

  • Start with plants, vegetables and herbs that are resilient and grow well in part-shade or full-shade.

  • Growing your own herbs is a great way to start – and will save money by not having to buy them at the supermarket.

  • Choose your favourite herbs to cook with, such as basil, thyme, oregano and even mint. You could even try chillies, but a bright, sunny spot is essential, as they do tend to thrive outdoors.

  • If you love a salad, start growing your own!  Lettuce and spinach good ones to try.

  • Microgreens are a tasty addition to salads and perfect for garnishes. These are usually miniature greens from radish, mustard greens, chard, broccoli, and lettuce. These will need a shallow container.

  • Spring onions are another good option for an indoor garden. They are low maintenance and fast growing. You can also grow them from spring onion scraps. Just put the part of the spring onion with the roots attached into a container of water (use an empty jar) and give it some sunlight!

  • Celery is another plant you can regrow from its scraps. Just plant the end root side down (make sure it's about 5 cm long) in either a container of water or a small amount of potting soil. New celery will start to grow in the centre. You can also do this with lettuce.
