What's been sleeping in your bed?

Keep your doona fresh and fabulous!

Let’s face it – our beloved doonas are like magnets for dust mites, bacteria, sweat, and skin cells. And considering we spend up to 35 per cent of our lives in bed, that’s a whole lot of organic matter snuggling up in our bedding. If you haven't washed your doona for a year, it could be playing host to more than 20,000 dust mites. Yuk!

How often should you wash your doona?

There’s some debate on how frequently we should wash our doonas, with opinions ranging from four times a year to just once or twice a year. But let’s be honest, most of us probably aren’t washing them as often as we should – if at all!

Washing synthetic fibre doonas

If your doona is made from synthetic fibres, put it into a large washing machine on a normal spin cycle at 60 degrees Celsius, or as hot as the care label allows. After washing, toss it in the tumble dryer or hang it out in direct sunlight. Easy peasy.

Caring for natural fibre doonas

For doonas made from natural fibres, you’ll need to be a bit more careful. Follow the care instructions carefully because natural fibres love to hold onto moisture, which can lead to rot if they don't dry thoroughly.

The laundromat to the rescue!

Not all of us have a washing machine and tumble dryer big enough for our big, fluffy doonas. So, this is where your local laundromat comes in handy! They’ve got the big machines needed to make sure your doona gets a proper wash and dry. Plus, many laundromats offer a wash and dry service, so you can simply drop off your doona and pick it up later, clean and fresh.

So, keep your doona in tip-top shape and give it the love it deserves. A fresh and clean doona means a happier, healthier sleep!
