Star ratings on appliances - what they mean

When shopping for appliances, it’s tempting to go for something that’s on sale. But there’s one small detail that can have a much bigger impact on your wallet (and the environment) - the energy star rating.

What they mean

Found on everything from fridges to dryers, this label is a government requirement - but it’s also a powerful tool to help you make smarter choices.

The star rating system is designed to help us quickly recognise how energy-efficient an appliance is. The more stars, the better the efficiency.

  • One star: the appliance meets minimum energy performance standards but is not particularly efficient.
  • Three stars: a mid-range rating, offering a balance between performance and energy use.
  • Five stars and above: high-efficiency models that use significantly less energy than lower-rated counterparts.

Some newer appliances even go beyond five stars, especially in categories like air conditioners and refrigerators, where super-efficient models are becoming more common.

Why energy efficiency matters

Choosing an energy-efficient appliance isn’t just about being eco-conscious - it’s also a smart financial decision.

  • Lower electricity bills: a five-star fridge can use up to 40% less energy than a two-star model, saving you hundreds over its lifetime.
  • Reduced environmental impact: less energy consumption means fewer greenhouse gas emissions (bonus).
  • Long-term value: while high-efficiency models may cost more upfront, they often pay for themselves through reduced running costs.

Energy use

As well at the star rating, the label also includes a number that tells you how much energy the appliance uses each year, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). This figure is crucial for comparing models.

  • Always compare appliances within the same category. A five-star washing machine and a five-star fridge don’t use the same amount of energy.
  • Consider your usage habits. If you rarely use your dryer, a lower-rated model might be fine. But for daily-use items like fridges or dishwashers, efficiency may matter more to you.

Tips for choosing wisely

  • There are lots of online comparison tools, where energy websites allow you to compare models side-by-side.
  • Think long-term. A cheaper appliance might cost more in the long run due to higher energy use.

So next time you go appliance shopping, stop and do a bit of star gazing!
