Mindfulness: Great for little minds!

In today's fast-paced world, kids can feel just as stressed and overwhelmed as adults. That's where mindfulness can help them to develop a sense of calm, focus and emotional resilience.

What is mindfulness?

  • Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present and engaged in the current moment, aware of your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without judgment.

  • It can be practised anytime, anywhere. For example, you can be mindful while eating, walking, or even during conversations.

  • The goal is to cultivate a heightened sense of awareness and to be ‘in the moment’.

Benefits of mindfulness for kids

  • Improves focus and concentration: Regular mindfulness practice can help kids improve their attention span and stay focused on tasks, whether it's homework or a hobby.

  • Helps emotional regulation: Mindfulness helps children understand and regulate their emotions better, leading to fewer meltdowns and more balanced moods.

  • Boosts self-esteem: Practising mindfulness can increase a child's self-awareness and self-acceptance, which are key components of healthy self-esteem.

  • Promotes better sleep: A calm mind leads to better sleep. Mindfulness can help kids relax before bedtime, making it easier for them to fall asleep and stay asleep.

How to practise mindfulness together

  • Start with breathing exercises: Simple breathing exercises are a great way to introduce mindfulness to kids. Try sitting together and taking slow, deep breaths. Count to four as you inhale, hold for four, and exhale for four. Repeat this a few times.

  • Practise mindful listening: Sit quietly together and listen to the sounds around you. It could be the chirping of birds, the hum of the refrigerator, or even your own breathing. This exercise helps kids become more aware of their surroundings and stay present in the moment.

  • Incorporate mindfulness into daily activities: Encourage your child to practice mindfulness during everyday activities, like eating or walking. For example, during a meal, you can both take a moment to notice the colours, textures, and flavours of the food.

  • Be patient and consistent: Like any new habit, mindfulness takes time to develop. Be patient and consistent with practice. Even a few minutes a day can make a big difference.

  • Mindfulness can be practised anytime and anywhere, during daily activities.

The goal of mindfulness is to help kids become more aware of their experiences and develop a sense of calm and focus. Practising these together can be a wonderful way to support your child's mental and emotional health.
