Getting kids into the kitchen is truly a win-win. It’s educational, fun, a great way to spend time together and you get to enjoy the yummy results. Here are 3 easy recipes to try.

Cake in a mug

Serves 1 – prep time 5 minutes, cook time 3 minutes

Ingredients

4 tbsp self-raising flour

2 tbsp sugar

2 tbsp cocoa

1 egg

3 tbsp milk

3 tbsp vegetable oil

1/2 tsp vanilla essence

1 tbsp chocolate chips

Method

  1. Place all the ingredients in a large mug and mix well with a spoon. Make sure there are no lumps left in the cocoa.  
  1. Add the egg and beat it a little on top of the dry ingredients to break the yolk.
  1. Add the oil, milk and vanilla essence and mix until well combined.
  1. Stir in the choc chips and cook in the microwave on high for 3 minutes.  
  1. Eat it straight out of the mug with a scoop of ice cream! (Take a look at our Ice cream in a bag recipe if you want to make your own!)  

Jam Drops

Makes 30, prep time 15 minutes, cook time 15 minutes

Ingredients

6 tbsp butter

1/2 cup sugar

1 egg

1/2 tsp vanilla essence

1 3/4 cups self-raising flour (sifted)

1 pinch salt

1/2 cup raspberry jam (or whichever flavour you prefer)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced).  
  1. Cover 2 baking sheets with baking paper and set aside.  
  1. Cream the butter and sugar together until pale.
  1. Add egg and vanilla and beat well.
  1. Add flour and salt and gently mix well.
  1. Using a teaspoon, make balls out of the batter and put on the baking tray about 2cm apart.  
  1. Make an indentation in the centre of each ball using the end of a wooden spoon or a clean finger.
  1. Fill each indentation with a quarter of a teaspoon of jam. Bake for 10-15 mins.
  1. Try not to eat them all at once!

Weet-bix slice

Serves 10, prep time 15 minutes, cook time 15 minutes

Ingredients

4 Weet-Bix (or any brand – crushed)  

1 cup plain flour

1/2 cup coconut

1/2 cup sugar

1 tbsp cocoa powder

70 g butter (melted)

1/4 cup water

Icing

2 cups icing sugar (sifted)

2 tbsp milk

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180C (160C fan-forced).  
  1. Melt butter and pour into the crushed Weet-Bix. Mix well.
  1. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir until combined.  
  1. Line a square cake tin with baking paper.
  1. Press the mixture into the base.  
  1. Bake for 15 minutes. Cool
  1. To make the icing, sift the icing sugar into a bowl.  
  1. Gradually add the milk while stirring until it is smooth and spreadable.  
  1. Pour the icing over the cooled slice in the cake tin and spread to cover.  
  1. Allow the icing to set.
  1. Slice into squares and enjoy!
