How to be a great trick-or-treater this Halloween

And in the blink of an eye, Halloween is here again. If you are taking part in Halloween activities this year, here are a few ‘rules’ you might like to follow to make it an enjoyable time for everyone.

For trick-or-treaters

  • No costume, no treats! If you’re going trick-or-treating, the expectation is that you will be wearing a costume. Make the effort and make it Halloween themed!
  • This should go without saying, but we thought we’d mention it, just in case. Always be polite! And stay calm when the lollies appear! Take it in turns to take one or two (depending on the size) and say thank you in a loud voice!
  • Younger children should always have an accompanying adult (you don’t have to go to the door with them. Give them a bit of independence by staying at the gate).
  • If older kids want to go trick or treating, don’t go in huge groups and this could be quite intimidating for some people.
  • Be considerate of private property, no trampling on lawns or flower beds, no littering, no damaging decorations, or ornaments.
  • Also, if you do plan to go trick or treating, consider donating some lollies to your neighbours to hand out.
  • Have fun!

For households

  • It’s a good idea to put up some sort of Halloween decorations if you are happy for trick or treaters to come to your door. You don’t have to go mad, just stick a few decorations on your letterbox.
  • On the flip side, if you don’t want to be disturbed, leave your outdoor lights off and don’t decorate!
  • Offer wrapped lollies only.
  • Always have some emergency treats handy just in case supplies run low. It’s a win-win – you won’t run out and if the trick-or-treaters don’t eat them – you can!
