How to buy and store food in summer correctly

Food storage is important all year round, but particularly in summer as food can spoil really quickly in the heat. Otherwise, you could be throwing your hard-earned cash into the bin (or compost heap!)

Let’s start with shopping!

  • Take an insulated cooler bag with ice packs for fresh and frozen food.
  • Visit the chilled and frozen food sections of the supermarket at the end of your shopping trip so your food isn't warming up in your trolley. Put them in the fridge or freezer as soon as you get home.
  • Avoid buying marked down food unless you are going to use it straight away or freeze it. You won’t be saving money if it goes off before you can use it!
  • Choose frozen foods at the supermarket from the back of the freezer – those at the front may be less frozen with the doors being constantly opened and closed.

At home

  • Cook and eat - or freeze - meat, poultry, and fish within two days of purchasing.
  • Overloading your fridge and freezer reduces their ability to cool food safely. Keep low risk items such as cool drinks out of the fridge and add ice cubes instead.  How to make sure your fridge stays cool
  • Always cover meats and store at the bottom of the fridge at or below 5 °C.
  • Store fruit and vegetables correctly to make them last as long as possible.

  • Freeze perishable items such as bread, meat, and fruits and vegetables to extend their life. Make sure you add a label with the date frozen.
  • Keep perishable foods refrigerated or frozen until ready to use.
  • Don't open refrigerator doors too often or leave them open for long periods.
  • Avoid letting your food sit at room temperature for more than two hours.
  • Use your nose! Check food for spoilage before eating.
  • Make sure you always practise food safety at home
  • Always thaw frozen food in the fridge overnight, rather than leaving it on the kitchen bench.
