‘Sit ups’ for the mind!

Sit ups are a classic way to strengthen your core, but have you ever thought about giving your brain the same sort of workout?

Why your brain needs regular exercise

Your brain likes to save energy, so it often slips into habits and routines. The downside is that sticking to the same patterns every day doesn’t give your mind much of a workout. When you challenge yourself to learn new things, solve problems or try different approaches, your brain builds fresh connections. This boosts memory, focus and creativity, and can also improve your overall mental wellbeing.

Easy ways to give your mind a workout

Keeping your brain active doesn’t mean finding hours of spare time. Small, simple activities can be surprisingly effective:

  • Puzzles and problem solving: Crosswords, sudoku, jigsaw puzzles, or number games are great ways to challenge your brain. They don’t take long, but they need your mind to focus and find solutions.
  • Learning something new: This could be a skill you’ve always wanted to try, like cooking a different cuisine, learning a few guitar chords, or even mastering a new app. Each new activity sparks fresh connections in your brain.
  • Breaking habits: Try swapping small parts of your routine. Take a different route to the shops, switch up the order of your morning tasks, or use your non-dominant hand for something simple (like brushing your teeth). These little changes stop your brain from running on autopilot.
  • Mindful moments: Practising mindfulness or meditation isn’t about emptying your mind but giving it a chance to reset. Even a few minutes of calm breathing can improve focus and clarity.
  • Reading with variety: Instead of sticking with your favourite type of book or article, branch out into something different. A new subject or style encourages your brain to think in new ways.

Making it part of everyday life

The key to keeping your brain active is consistency. You don’t need to dedicate hours a day, just a few minutes here and there makes a difference if you do it often enough. Mix up the activities so your mind doesn’t get too comfortable and choose things you genuinely enjoy.
