How to get rid of cracked heels (ouch!)

We all know we have to look after our skin, particularly in summer - but what about our poor old feet? Here’s how to give them a bit of TLC; after all, they do carry us around all day!

No doubt you’ve been making the most of the summer weather, but your poor feet have probably been through a lot! Walking around in flip-flops, getting sand in your toes, and exposing them to the hot, dry air can all take a toll on your skin, leaving you with some seriously cracked heels.

Here are some simple steps you can take to get your feet looking and feeling smooth and healthy again.

  1. The hot, dry weather and exposure to sand and saltwater can cause your skin to lose moisture, leading to cracks and roughness. Start by drinking plenty of water to keep your body hydrated from the inside out.
  1. Using a pumice stone or foot file, gently scrub away any dead skin on your heels. This will help to smooth out the roughness and allow any moisturising products to be absorbed by your skin more easily. Just be careful not to overdo the scrubbing - you don't want to damage the healthy skin on your feet!
  1. Use a gentle soap to wash your feet, paying extra attention to your heels. After washing, dry thoroughly and then apply a good quality foot cream. Look for a thick, nourishing cream or balm and apply it generously to your heels. Be sure to massage it in well, focusing on the areas with the most cracks.
  1. For an extra hydrating boost, you can also try using coconut oil or shea butter on your heels overnight. Simply apply a generous amount to your feet and slip on some socks before bed. When you wake up, your skin will feel soft and supple.
  1. Another way to soothe your cracked heels is to soak your feet in warm water. Add some Epsom salts or essential oils to the water for a spa-like experience. Once your feet are nice and soft, use a foot file or pumice stone to gently exfoliate the skin. Finish off with a thick layer of moisturiser and your feet will be as good as new (well, almost)!
  1. Finally, to prevent cracked heels in the future, be sure to wear comfortable, supportive shoes that fit well. Avoid shoes that rub or pinch your feet, as this can cause blisters and calluses. Avoid going barefoot as much as possible and try to keep your feet moisturised and protected from the elements.
  1. You could also give your feet a treat with a pedicure
