Make glow-in-the-dark bubbles – 2 ways!

Take your bubble making to the next level and impress your kids. We have two methods and it’s the perfect activity for this time of year!

June 21, 2023

Adult supervision is a must for both methods!

Glow Sticks

  • 5 non-toxic glow sticks – all the same colour
  • Scissors
  • Clear container
  • Bubble blowing wand
  • 5 cups clear bubble liquid (you can make your own by gently mixing ½ cup liquid dish soap with 4.5 cups water and 4 tbsp glycerine)
  • Paper towels
  1. Crack the glow sticks to activate them – the kids can help with this step.
  2. Adults only – wearing gloves, carefully cut of the ends of the glow sticks – do this over some paper towels just in case there is any splatter. If the liquid isn’t coming out, you can also chop off the other end which should speed things up.
  3. Empty the contents of all five glow sticks into the container.
  4. Pour in the clear bubble liquid and mix well.
  5. You should have a container of brightly coloured bubble mix! Let the bubble blowing commence!

Highlighter pens

  • Clear bubble solution – about 5 cups. You can buy readymade solution or make your own by gently mixing ½ cup liquid dish soap with 4.5 cups water and 4 tbsp glycerine.
  • Non-toxic highlighter pens (fluorescent or neon colours)
  • Small containers or bowls – one for each colour you are using.
  • Blacklight or UV light (optional, but it will enhance the glow effect)
  • Bubble wands
  1. Make your bubble solution (if you are making your own)
  2. Wearing gloves (to avoid fluorescent fingers!) take your highlighter pens and carefully remove the back end or the top of the pen to access the ink inside – it’s absorbed into a cotton-like material inside the pen. Remove.
  3. Pour some water into a small container and submerge the inky/cotton. Use a separate container for each colour.
  4. Let the cotton material soak in the water for a while, so that the ink seeps into the water. This can take a few minutes. Gently squeeze the cotton/ink to release more colour. You should see the water changing colour and becoming fluorescent or neon (depending on your pens).
  5. Add this coloured water to your bubble solution. Start with a small amount (you can always add more if needed). Stir or shake the solution gently to mix the colour evenly.
  6. Time to get blowing (gently!)
  7. If you have a blacklight or UV light, shine it on the bubbles for an enhanced glowing effect.

And if you’re in the mood for more bubbles – here’s how to make the biggest bubbles ever!
