How often should you wash your bedsheets?

There’s nothing nicer than getting into bed when the sheets and pillowcases are freshly washed. But how often do they need to be washed to stay clean and healthy?

March 16, 2023

The general consensus for sheet washing seems to be once a week, but did you know that a recent survey of 1000 people found that only half of the people wash their bedlinen weekly? (No judgement here!).

We’re not sure who came up with the ‘once a week’ rule, but it does make sense when you think about it.

  • You spend a third of your life sleeping, and during that time your body sheds dead skin cells, sweat, and oils that can all build up in your sheets over time.
  • If you suffer from allergies, dust mites and other allergens can accumulate in your bedding and make things even worse. This is particularly important in summer, as you will sweat more and it’s usually the time when allergies reach their peak. What's lurking in your pillow?
  • Your face and hair lay on your pillowcase every night, so it's super important to keep it clean so your skin and hair stay healthy and looking their best. How to choose the perfect pillow
  • An added benefit to washing your bedlinen each week is that it can help your sheets and pillowcases last longer by preventing dirt and oils from breaking down the fibres over time.

If you're feeling a little overwhelmed by the thought of washing your sheets every week, you could push it to every two weeks. You can also buy a couple of extra sheet sets, so you always have a clean set on hand, and you can wash the used sheets when you have a little more time. Easy peasy!

When was the last time you washed your doona?
