It’s time for your trusty lawn mower to spring into action as summer kicks in and your grass starts to grow at warp speed. Here’s how to prepare it for all the work ahead.

Clean it

Use a strong spray of water and a blunt knife to remove any grass caked on the mower blades. Squirt a little oil on to the blades prevent rusting and wipe off any excess.

Clean the top of the mower as well, with a cloth or brush to remove grass, leaves and any other debris that’s hanging around.

Lubricate

Your mower will work better and last longer if you keep it lubricated. Always follow the instructions in your owner's manual and be sure to wipe off any excess oil.

Change the oil

If you haven’t already, change the oil. Remove the oil drain plug at the bottom of the engine and let the dirty oil run out into a container. When it's completely drained, replace the plug, and refill with the type and quantity of oil recommended in your owner's manual.

Spark plugs

Disconnect the spark plugs and give them a good clean.

Batteries

If you have a battery-operated mower, make sure the battery is fully charged at all times!

Sharpen the blades

This one is best left to the experts. Taking off the blades to sharpen them can be a tricky business if you don’t know what you are doing.
