The answer is to buy or borrow. When you rent or borrow tools, you only pay for the time you need them – or not at all. So, whether you're tackling a weekend project or something a bit bigger, you won't break the bank - and there are a few great options out there!
Tools 'n' Things Library
This is WA's first tool library and library of things. They are a Perth-based non-profit organisation led by volunteers.
-
Their mission is to promote a reduction in consumption and waste and provide unlimited access to the community library of shared tools.
-
There is a low-cost membership fee. For membership options contact them via Facebook or at admin@toolsnthingslibrary.org.au.
-
As a non-profit, they are also always welcoming new volunteers to the team. Please contact them if you are interested.
Start a ‘lending group’
If you and your friends (or neighbours) love a bit of DIY, why not get together when it comes to tools. You might find that between you, you have something for every job.
Buy Nothing groups
Join your local Buy Nothing Facebook group and request to borrow any tools you need. There will probably be someone who has something you need and will be happy to lend it to you – all at no cost!
Rent
There are also lots of rental companies around Perth where you can hire just about any tool for any job!
The benefits of not buying power tools!
-
Low- or no-cost: Quality tools often come with a hefty price tag, and let's be real – some of them might end up gathering dust in your garage after just one use. Renting or sharing with neighbours lets you access a range of tools without breaking the bank.
-
Free up storage space: You don’t have to give up valuable storage space. Some tools can be bulky and unless you have a massive garage or shed, they might end up cluttering your living space.
-
The latest equipment: Rental shops usually have the latest, high-quality equipment to rent.
-
No maintenance: Owning lots of tools means you're responsible for keeping them in tip-top shape. That can mean shelling out more money for repairs, replacements, or even just routine maintenance. When you rent tools, the rental company takes care of all that hassle.
-
Try before you buy: If you do want to buy your own tools, you can try a few before deciding which will be the best for you – saving you from expensive mistakes!
