How to find a charity near your suburb

If you like the idea of supporting charities, but also want to help your community, here’s how you can find charity or not-for-profit organisations in your local area.

The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission has a great website that makes it easy to track down local websites in your area. Just enter your suburb and then what type of charity you would like to help.

Search for a local charity here.

First, consider which causes are important to you – this will help you narrow down which charities (or not-for-profit organisations) you would like to support. Maybe it’s something close to your heart, or you might just want to choose an organisation that depends solely on donations or volunteer help.

When you support a local charity:

  • You’ll be making a positive contribution to your local area and supporting the local community.
  • Smaller charities have been hit hard over the past couple of years. Your support will help boost their efforts within the local area.
  • Local charities are typically smaller, meaning more of your money goes directly to the community and doesn’t get lost in admin costs.
  • When you donate your time, you are solving a huge problem for most organisations.

In some cases, the charity location displayed may be a head office.  It’s worth contacting the charity to find out if they operate in your local area.

Other ways to help charities or not-for-profit organisations in your area:

  • Help out in your local op shop
  • Join a local Men's Shed as a mentor
  • Volunteer for your local branch of the SES
  • Donate blood at your local centre
  • You can also contact organisations such as The Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul Society for opportunities to help in your local community.
