Gutters tend to fall into the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ category. But it’s important to make sure they are working effectively so they can protect our homes from water damage.

Watch out for these signs

  1. Water running down the side of your home

Clogs often start at the point where your gutter system meets the downpipes. If this section is blocked, rainwater will overflow and run down the side of your home, seeping into any cracks and crevices, causing damage such as damp and mould.

  1. Rust spots on your gutters

This could be a sign that your gutters have been blocked for a while. Bubbling paint on the underside of the gutters or on your downpipes is also a sign that debris has been sitting in there for enough time to cause damage.

  1. Sagging guttering

Wet leaves and twigs in gutters make them heavier. This can cause them to sag or even pull out the fasteners holding them in place.

  1. Stains on the eaves

This means that the water is running backwards into your home because it has nowhere else to go.

  1. Garden in your gutters!

If vegetation is starting to sprout in your guttering, it means there is plenty of mulched debris which is the perfect environment for things to grow!

  1. Pest activity

If you’ve noticed a few more rodents than usual around your home – it’s because the debris you’ve have in your gutters is a great source of food – it’s like an all you can eat buffet for pests!

For your gutters and downpipes to work properly, they need to be cleaned on a regular basis. This means climbing a ladder and doing it yourself (not recommended - don't become a DIY statistic!) or calling your local professional gutter cleaner.
