Know your enemy!
-
Moths love dark and undisturbed places, which is precisely why they love your wardrobe.
-
They're particularly attracted to natural fibres such wool, silk, and cashmere because they contain keratin – the protein found in hair, fur, and feathers. For them it’s a delicious snack – but not so good for your favourite outfits.
First things first – declutter!
-
Before declaring war on the moths, create some light and space. Moths love hiding in piles of clothes and dark corners, so give them fewer places to sneak around.
-
Open up your wardrobe doors and drawers regularly to let some fresh air and sunlight in.
Only store away clean clothes
-
Before storing your clothes at the end of the season, make sure they're fresh and clean. Moths are less likely to be interested if they smell nice.
-
Wash or dry-clean your clothes and store them in airtight containers or vacuum-seal bags.
Moth deterrents
-
Moths can't stand the scent of cedar, so put cedar blocks or chips in your wardrobe and drawers or use cedar hangers.
-
Hang some dried lavender sachets or make your own by adding a few drops of lavender essential oil to cotton balls.
-
Now, this may sound a bit crazy, but it works. For items you can't wash or clean easily (such as delicate woollens) pop them into sealed plastic bags and put them in the freezer for a couple of days. Extreme cold is deadly to moths!
-
Create a potent mixture of moth-repelling herbs. Grab some rosemary, thyme, cloves, and bay leaves, mix, and put them in little fabric bags or mesh pouches and hang them in and around your clothes.
Regularly inspect your wardrobe for any signs of moth mischief. Catching a potential infestation early can save your clothes from becoming moth snacks!
