The best way to wash (and dry) woollens in winter

Winter is the perfect time to snuggle up in your favourite jumper – but they may need gentle handling to hold on to their softness and shape. Here are some tips on how to wash and dry woollens during the wet winter months.

Washing

  • Check the care label. Always read the care instructions on your woollens. Some may be machine washable, while others require handwashing.
  • Opt for cold water to prevent shrinking or felting (where the fibres press together).
  • Use a mild detergent specially formulated for wool or delicate fabrics. Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage the fibres.
  • If handwashing is recommended, fill a basin with cold water and add a small amount of wool detergent. Gently agitate the garment in the water for a few minutes, then rinse with clean water.
  • For machine washable wool, place the garment inside a mesh laundry bag for extra protection.
  • Select a delicate or wool cycle with cold water and use a gentle detergent. Avoid using fabric softeners or bleach.
  • If your jumper is labelled as dry clean only, take it to a professional cleaner. Don’t be tempted to shove it into the washing machine or it could come out the size for a 5-year-old!

Drying

  • When drying woollens in the colder, rainier months, the most important step is to get rid of the excess water if you’ve had to hand wash.
  • Items should be dried flat to avoid stretching – you should also avoid wringing or twisting.
  • Lay your jumper flat on a pale coloured or white towel that is clean and lint free. Gently remove as many creases or folds as possible by smoothing it out with your hands.
  • You can also roll it up in the towel to remove excess moisture – then use a fresh, dry towel to dry flat.
  • Use a flat drying rack and gently pull it back into shape.
  • Special garment drying mesh screens are also available, which are designed to fit over the bathtub.
  • Avoid using a tumble dryer or placing it near direct heat sources like heaters.
  • Flip it halfway through the drying process – to make sure it is thoroughly dry.

Ask yourself, does it need to be washed? If it’s not dirty or stained, simply put it outside on a drying rack or table for a refresh!
