Declutter your home

Don’t start packing until you’ve decluttered. It’s pointless spending time packing things that you really don’t need.

Pack like a pro!

Come up with a packing system so all your boxes end up in the right rooms when they get to your new home. You could colour code your boxes, with the same colour on the door of each room in your new house or simply write ‘bedroom 1’ etc. on each box with a corresponding sign on the room doors.

Create a moving caddy

Have everything on hand so you’re not wasting time hunting for packing tape or scissors. And remind everyone put anything back when they’ve used it!

Packing

  • Use socks to wrap around glasses – you’ll also be saving on paper or bubble wrap.
  • Wrap artwork and/or large items in doonas, quilts, and blankets.
  • Don’t wrap individual plates – put a paper plate in between each ceramic plate. This will speed things up nicely.
  • Leave clothes on their hangers – use a bin liner to wrap around them to transport easily and just put them straight into the wardrobes in your new home.
  • When packing footwear place your shoes inside plastic shower caps to prevent anything else getting dirty.
  • Keep all the contents from drawers in individual bags and label them so you know which drawer to return them to. This is particularly handy for office drawers.
  • Find your sheet sets easily by folding them and storing in their matching pillowcase.

Reassembly in your new home

  • Take photos of how any electronics cables are connected (for example your TV and entertainment system) for easy and stress free set up in your new home.
  • When removing screws from items place them in a zip lock bag and tape it to the furniture it belongs to.

And have a box which contains any items you may need in first few hours in your new home. It could include tea and coffee, milk, snacks, kettle, mugs and teaspoons, water bottles, toilet paper, spare light bulbs, paper towels and cleaning materials (and anything else you can think of).
