How to support Walk to Work Day

Friday September 2nd is Walk to Work Day – and even if you are working from home, or work too far away, there are some great ways to get a bit more walking into your workday (and every day!).

September 1, 2022

Walk to Work Day supports Diabetes Australia and promotes regular walking as a healthy activity. With millions of Australians living with all types of diabetes or at risk of type 2 diabetes there has never been a better time to get walking and start on the path to a healthier you.

Get walking!

Walk as much as you can on Walk to Work Day. If you can't walk all the way, use public transport, and get off the bus, train, tram or ferry a few stops earlier and walk the rest of the way to work; or take a half-hour walk at lunchtime. Walk in a group or individually – all walking helps support this important message.

Walking tips for busy people

  • Walk some or if you can, walk all the way to work.
  • Get off the bus or train a few stops earlier.
  • Leave the car at least 1km away from work and walk the rest of the way.
  • Set your alarm 30 minutes earlier to fit in a walk.
  • Organise a walk at lunchtime with colleagues or if you’re at home, walk around the block a couple of times.
  • Take walking phone calls – stand up and walk around.
  • Walk all or part of the way to meetings rather than driving or catching taxis.
  • Schedule a ‘walking meeting’. Walk and talk and you’ll get double the benefit.
  • Ensure you get up from your desk at least once an hour and walk around the office/house.
  • Wherever possible, use the stairs instead of the escalator or lift.
