Getting started

When choosing which garlic to plant, it’s best to buy planting garlic from your local garden centre, rather than grabbing some from the supermarket.

Choose a pot that is at least 30cm deep and has good drainage.

Planting

Plant garlic in late autumn or early winter.

Fill the pot with a high-quality potting mix and some organic matter, like compost or well-rotted manure.

Plant the individual cloves about 10cm apart and 5cm deep, pointy end up.

Use the largest, plumpest cloves. Don't plant any that have started to shrivel, and avoid planting small cloves, as these will just produce small bulbs.

Caring for your garlic

Place your containers in a sunny spot that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.

Water the garlic regularly but be careful not to over water as it doesn’t like to sit in waterlogged soil.

Fertilise with a balanced organic fertiliser every two weeks.

Harvesting

Garlic takes approximately 6 to 9 months to mature. Harvest when the lower leaves turn yellow and start to dry out.

Gently lift the bulbs from the soil using a garden fork or trowel.

Hang them in a cool, dry place to cure for a few weeks before using.
