Start a garden in an egg carton!

Growing seeds indoors is easy and can help teach kids about germination and plant care – and one of the easiest ways is in an empty egg carton!

February 27, 2024

You will need:

  • 1 egg carton – lid removed

  • Potting mix (or soft, well-draining soil)

  • Seeds

  • Water in a spray bottle

  • A sunny spot indoors

Seeds

Most kids aren't well known for their patience, so it's best to choose seeds that are easy and quick to grow.

Good options include:

  • Lettuce varieties

  • Mustard greens

  • Cress

  • Beans

  • Carrots

  • Radishes

  • Herbs

  • Sunflowers

  • Tomatoes

  • Marigolds

  • Cosmos

  • Zinnias

  • Nasturtiums

How to create your egg carton garden

  1. Using a small spoon, fill each egg carton section with potting mix/soil, leaving a little space at the top.

  2. Make a small hole in the centre of each cup of soil with your finger (or the end of a pencil). Drop one or two seeds into each hole, then gently cover them with soil.

  3. Use a spray bottle to moisten the soil with water. Be gentle to avoid washing the seeds away. The soil should be damp but not soaked.

  4. Put your egg carton garden on a windowsill or somewhere it will get plenty of sunlight.

  5. Keep the soil moist, but not too wet. In a few days to weeks, depending on what you planted, you’ll see the seeds start to sprout.

  6. Once your plants have grown and the weather outside is suitable, you can transplant them into a garden or larger pots. Simply cut each section apart and plant each section directly into the soil, carton and all!
