The germiest place in your home

We all know the toilet can harbour germs, but you may be surprised that it’s not the worst offender in your home.

And the winner is (drum roll please) … your kitchen!

And the germiest item in the germiest place is your kitchen sponge. They live their lives damp or wet which provides the perfect breeding ground for E. coli and even Salmonella.

You can reduce germs by microwaving your kitchen sponges for 30 seconds every few days (be careful, they will be hot) and replacing them regularly. You can also throw them into the dishwasher along with any dishcloths you use. And never use the same sponges/cloths in the kitchen and bathroom or toilet!

Other germy places include:

  • Oven & stove top knobs - if they are removable, wash them in hot, soapy water. If not disinfect them regularly.
  • Kitchen sink & taps – wipe over with disinfectant every couple of days.
  • Microwave & fridge door handle – wipe down with disinfectant every couple of days.
  • Fridge shelves & compartments – give them a clean once a month, or straight away if there has been a spill or leak from food.
  • Countertop – wipe with disinfectant at the end of every day and don’t put shopping bags that have been on the floor, onto the countertop.
  • Cutting boards (they contain 200 times more bacteria than a toilet seat!). Always use separate boards for raw meat, cooked meat, and vegetables, and clean with hot, soapy water or put them in the dishwasher.
  • Tea towels – these should be changed every day and only used to dry hands. Dishes should be left to air dry if you don’t have a dishwasher.
  • Any light or power outlet switches – disinfect every couple of days.
  • Pet bowls – clean them with warm soapy water – or put them in the dishwasher.

More places you should clean but probably don't!
