Just finished cleaning? Did you know you could have made your home dirtier? Sorry, but it’s true! Here’s how to avoid all your hard work going to waste.

It’s pointless cleaning your home with equipment that is dirty! Make sure you clean everything regularly:

  • Your vacuum cleaner – empty after each use and make sure that hair and fur hasn’t wrapped itself around the brushes. If it contains a filter, clean it regularly and if you use bags, replace them on a regular basis.
  • Wash cleaning cloths after each use. Have two sets one in the wash and one to use.
  • Also sanitise germy items such as toilet brushes on a regular basis. Just fill a bucket with water and disinfectant and leave them in there to kill all the germs.

And:

  • Spray and wait. Some cleaning products take a few minutes to work, so spray the area you want to clean and then leave it for a few minutes to do something else. Then, come back and wipe clean. This also works well for marks on walls. Spring cleaning shortcuts
  • Always clean before spraying disinfectant or you will be disinfecting grime rather than your surfaces. The germiest places in your home.
  • Don’t clean from the ground up – always work from the ceiling down or you’ll be forever dusting shelves and vacuuming the floor!
  • Never wipe spills on fabric such as carpets, rugs, and sofas. They should be carefully blotted with an absorbent cloth or paper towel. Otherwise, you are pushing the stain deeper into fibres.
  • Household items you should clean more often.
  • Think twice before you reach for the sponge to wipe down your countertops. Kitchen sponges are notorious for harbouring bacteria, which can transfer to other surfaces as you clean. To avoid spreading germs, use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe down surfaces (you could use a different colour for each area), or disinfect your sponges regularly and replace them about once a month. You can also pop your sponges in the dishwasher for a good clean! More things you can wash in your dishwasher!
