Clean it
Remove all debris from the water, skimmer, pump basket and filters. If anything is left to sink to the bottom it can stain the surface and be a real pain to clean.
Check the pool equipment
- Make sure the pump is working and there is no calcium build-up on the chlorinator.
- Backwash your sand filter to clean out any contaminants or give your cartridge filter a good hose down.
- Run the pump, filter and chlorinator for 4 hours a day over winter.
Balance the water
Everything in your pool becomes more efficient with properly balanced water. You’ll be protecting the water from algae outbreaks and your pool surface and equipment will also last longer.
Add a phosphate remover
Although your pool might not contain algae, the addition of a phosphate remover will remove any potential food source for it to develop.
Use your pool cover
A cover protects your pool from the elements and evaporation – and you won’t have a pool full of leaves when spring arrives!
These are the basic requirements, but if you don’t have the time or inclination to bed down your pool for the winter, call your local pool professional and they’ll be able to do it for you. They will also be able to check the pool over winter to make sure that everything is going as it should, so your pool is ready for use again when the sunshine returns!
