In 2022, over 300,000 Australians shopped or sold at more than 15,000 garage sales across the nation. Together, they extended the life of over 3 million kgs of stuff saving these items from landfill and maximising the value of all the energy and resources that goes in to making the stuff we buy. It's the circular economy in action!
The Garage Sale Trail is lots of garage sales happening on the same day all over Perth. More people will be out and about looking for things to buy, so It's a great time to declutter and make a bit of money as a bonus.
And did you know that by extending the life of an item of clothing by just 9 months reduces its carbon, waste, and water footprint by 20% - 30%? * Nope, we didn't, but that's awesome! This just goes to show that when it comes to recycling every little bit helps.

To make life easier (and more fun!) gather your neighbours and hold your garage sale together. Or share a driveway - have separate sales, but in the same place - a bit like a local mini market!
Plan, plan, plan

Be sure to have enough items to make your sale worthwhile for visitors. This is why it's a great idea to get friends and neighbours involved - the more stuff you have, the more buyers you'll attract.

Use the free promo materials on the Garage Sale Trail website and the power of social media to get the word out.

Consider a Free Box to pass on items that are of little or no value.

Make sure you have enough tables and clothes racks. Items on tables are more likely to be picked up and bought than items on the floor.

Make sure all sale items are clean.

Most garage sales run from 9am – 2pm which makes it a great time to set yours up too.

Be realistic with pricing - consider creating a table for items of a certain value or use a pricing chart with coloured stickers to make it super easy for shoppers to buy.

Collect paper shopping bags for people to put their purchases in as well as old newspaper or recycled bubble wrap for wrapping fragile items.

Make sure you have LOTS of change, a money belt, and a calculator ready for the big day. Or if you have a PayPal account, offer touch-free payments with PayPal QR codes. No cash or card swapping needed. sellers with a PayPal account can accept touch-free payments using PayPal QR codes without needing to exchange cash or payment information.

Weather-ready: Have a plan for rain (such as a garage or undercover area), sunscreen for sunny days, and shade.

Stay hydrated: Keep water handy and consider offering a thirst-quenching drink to shoppers. If you have kids, they could have a lemonade and cupcake stand to make some pocket money.

Signage: Big, bold, and bright signage is everything on sale day. Place them in areas that are busy over the weekend like main roads and cafes. Be sure to include the essentials (date, time and location) and use directional arrows too.
